Ensuring Safe and Respectful Festive Celebrations – November 2025

As we approach the festive season, it’s essential to remember that celebrations should be joyful, inclusive, and above all, safe for everyone. With the ongoing legal Duty to Prevent Sexual Harassment, schools and academies must take proactive steps to ensure all holiday events—whether on or off-site—are free from harassment and foster a culture of respect and care.

1. Prioritise Proactive Prevention

  • Conduct Thorough Risk Assessments: Identify and address any potential risks associated with festive events, especially those involving alcohol or external venues.
  • Learn from the Past: Review previous events and staff feedback to anticipate and mitigate possible issues.
  • Implement Safeguards: Opt for inclusive, accessible activities and set clear expectations for behaviour.

  1. Strengthen Policies and Communication
  • Update and Share Policies: Ensure anti-harassment and conduct policies are up to date and explicitly cover all festive events, including those off-site or involving third parties.
  • Communicate Expectations Early: Circulate guidelines well in advance, making it clear that respectful, professional conduct is required at all times.

  1. Foster a Supportive and Safe Culture
  • Mandatory Training: Provide regular training for all staff on recognising, preventing, and responding to harassment.
  • Emphasise Legal Responsibilities: Remind everyone of the legal duty to prevent sexual harassment and the consequences of failing to uphold these standards.
  • Encourage Open Dialogue: Create safe channels for staff to raise concerns or report inappropriate behaviour without fear of reprisal.

Let’s work together to make this festive season not only memorable and enjoyable, but also safe, respectful, and free from harassment for all. Proactive prevention is everyone’s responsibility—let’s set the standard for a positive, inclusive school community.
