As you may be aware, in July the Government announced the following increase to Teachers’ pay effective from 1st September:
- A 6.5% uplift to the minimum and maximum values of all the teaching and leadership pay ranges, advisory pay points and the minimum and maximum values for TLR and SEN allowances
- A higher uplift to the minimum of the main pay range to achieve the Government’s commitment of a £30,000 starting salary for new teachers
This increase is subject to the conclusion of a statutory consultation period and parliamentary approval - which isn’t anticipated until mid October when the 2023 School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD) is expected to be published.
School Leaders and Governing Bodies may wish to begin to have provisional discussions about how to implement this year’s proposed changes in line with the School’s current pay policy and their own budgetary position. However, Maintained Schools for whom the STPCD is a statutory document and also those Academies which follow STPCD terms are strongly advised not to finalise their pay policy or make any decisions regarding pay until this year’s pay award is confirmed. Any increases in pay for individual teachers will then be backdated to 1st September.
