We’ve enhanced our offer to include the option to use the Update Service through our EmploymentCheck system.   

You’ll be able to complete a check via the Update Service with the consent of your employee if they have registered with the DBS update service.  This enhancement will allow you to use the Update Service instead of going down the route of requiring a full DBS enhanced or standard check as appropriate.    

 

There will still be some important checks you’ll need to carry out:

  • Ensure you’ve seen the applicant’s original certificate
  • Make sure you have checked the applicant’s ID to confirm their identity
  • That you have the applicant’s consent
  • That you are legally entitled to the same level of DBS certificate – standard or enhanced
  • That you’ve checked that the DBS certificate only contains the exact workforce and barred lists that you are entitled to know about, for the role you are recruiting for. 

 

You can carry out ‘status’ checks at any point, but we suggest no more than once a year or in line with your own organisational policies.  This is because whilst the DBS will complete regular searches to see if any new information has come to light since the original disclosure was issued, the frequency of these searches will vary depending on the level and type of DBS certificate.  For criminal conviction and barring information, the DBS will search for updates on a weekly basis.  For non-conviction information, the DBS will search for updates every 9 months. 

 

It must be noted that the DBS Update Service won’t inform you automatically of a status change,  you will need to carry out periodic checks of a certificate, with the individual’s consent, via our EmploymentCheck integration.    If there is new information or changes to the status of the individual’s DBS certificate you should request a new standard or enhanced DBS check.  This will ensure that any new content or updates can be thoroughly reviewed and verified and any appropriate risk assessment undertaken.
